I have not bought one yet.
That is the honest starting point. I am a student in Stellenbosch and I want a Defender 90 TD5. I have wanted one for a while. What I did not expect was how hard it would be to simply work out where to look.
The cars are scattered. AutoTrader, Cars.co.za, Gumtree, half a dozen dealer sites, and a rotating cast of Facebook groups where the good ones seem to sell before they are properly listed. Check one, miss another. There is no single place to see what is actually available.
The knowledge is worse. Everything worth knowing about these cars exists, but it is buried. A brilliant answer about TD5 head gaskets sits in a forum thread from 2019 that nobody can search. The workshop everyone quietly recommends is known only to people who already know. Ask the same question in three places and you get three answers and no way to tell which is right.
The community is here. It is generous and it knows a great deal. It just does not have a home.
So I built one. Defender Country is the site I wanted while I was looking. A forum where good answers stay findable. A gallery of real builds. A calendar of what is happening and where. A directory of the workshops actually worth calling. In time, one place to see every classic Defender for sale in the country.
It is new and it is not finished. I am not a developer and this gets built between lectures. But every part of it exists because I needed it and could not find it, which feels like a reasonable way to decide what to build next.

I will get my 90 eventually. This is what happened on the way.
